Master System
The Master System was Sega's flagship 8-bit hardware, based on the Japanese Sega Mark III, released in Japan in 1985 and meant to compete with the Nintendo Entertaiment System in the third generation home console market. The Master System launched in North America in 1986, followed by Europe and Australia in 1987, and then in Brazil and Korea in 1989. Games were released on My Cards and regular cartridges. A cheaper model without My Card reader, the Master System II, was released in 1990. Using the Master Gear adapter or the Power Base converter, Master System could be played on Game Gear and Mega Drive. Notable games include Phantasy Star, Wonderboy, Wonderboy: The Dragon's Trap, Alex Kidd in Miracle World, Fantasy Zone, Golvellius, Golden Axe Warrior, Ys: Vanished Omens, R-Type and Aleste. Later European exclusives such as Sonic the Hedgehog, Asterix, Castle of Illusion or Land of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse are among the best games available for the hardware. More Info: Wikipedia
